The brief for this project was to convert an open plan corner bookshop into an inviting café / deli, with a small commercial kitchen for preparing sale items such as pre-cooked meals and condiments.

The existing 1970s building was designed by well known local architect Ivan Ivanoff who often formed his buildings with walls of intricately patterned concrete blockwork. In this instance the western external wall was an arrangement of vertical apertures and stacked grooved blockwork. This provided the inspiration of the Excelsior Deli’s corner product display wall that formed the alcove around the concrete communal lunch table.

Simple, natural, contrasting finishes formed the interior palate. This combined with furniture zoning and low level lighting offer customers an intriguing yet agreeable space.
